passing - installation views

Passing, an installation created for Lamar University's Dishman Gallery, is an extension of my research into 19th century Chinese labor. Comprised of three sets of oversized replicas of Chinese "coolie" garments, the garments were suspended from the gallery's 22 ft. ceiling by hemp rope.

This piece was reconfigured for the 2000 Aspen Valley Biennial.

The words, Heathen Chinee, John Chinaman and China Sam, were computer-printed onto the side plackets of each jacket. Typical names given to Chinese laborers, the garments themselves recall the passage of history and memories. passing - detail view of "coolie" jacket
